The Best Areas in Bali for a Family Stay

Bali is not one destination but a dozen, and the right base can change the whole shape of a trip with children.

The Best Areas in Bali for a Family Stay

People talk about "Bali" as though it were a single place, but a family week in the rice terraces of Ubud looks nothing like one on the beaches of the south. Choosing the right area is really about matching the island to your children's ages and your own tolerance for driving.

The south coast for first-timers

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur form the reliable heart of family Bali. They have the widest choice of villas, the shortest transfers from the airport, and enough cafes, pharmacies and supermarkets that you never feel far from what you need. Sanur in particular has calm, shallow water and a flat beachfront path that is a gift with a pushchair.

Ubud for a change of pace

Inland, Ubud trades beach for jungle, river valleys and cooler evenings. It suits slightly older children who'll enjoy a monkey forest, a waterfall walk and rice-field views from the breakfast table. The drive up from the airport is longer, so many families split their trip: a few nights in the hills, then down to the coast.

The quieter fringes

If you've been before and want space, the east coast around Candidasa or the far reaches of the Bukit peninsula reward the extra travel with emptier beaches and lower prices. These are second-trip areas — glorious, but a long way from a late-night pharmacy.

Wherever you land, resist the urge to see everything. Two bases in ten days is plenty; three is a holiday spent in the back of a car. Pick the area that fits the trip you actually want, and let the rest of the island wait for next time.
